Benefits of Cord Blood Banking
When a baby is born, the umbilical cord is filled with remnants of blood; this specific blood is referred to as Cord blood. This blood is known to help with a variety of medical treatments because it is enhanced and enriched with valuable stem cells. Cord blood is most importantly known for regenerating healthy blood cells and immune cells after a person undergoes any kind of chemotherapy treatment.
Cord Blood vs. Bone Marrow
Cord blood is easier to collect than bone marrow. More importantly, when your cord blood is banked, it is accessible immediately by your family when the time is of essence. Although these stem cells, which are gathered from cord blood are an exact match to your child; they are also less mature than the bone marrow stem cells, meaning there is less of a need for a perfect match for a sibling and other relatives if needed.
As recent studies show, when comparing cord blood to bone marrow; using the cord blood will lower the risk of transplant rejection and the risk of graft versus host disease.
No Medical Risks
Getting cord blood is a safe, completely pain and hassle-free process. Usually, a collection set is sent to the customer and you do the whole process at the convenience of your own home.
Tested, stored frozenly and ready to use.
Your cord blood will arrive at the cord blood bank, checked thoroughly to be sure that it has enough blood forming cells for a transplant, and to be 100% sure it is contamination free. Lastly, it is frozen in a liquid nitrogen freezer and stored until it is needed.
A perfect match is not needed.
Recently studies have shown when conducting a cord blood transplant you do not need to have an exact match. As long as the donor and the recipient are partially matched, the transplant can be performed – whereas bone marrow grafts require 8 of 8 matching in most cases.
Cord blood transplants have lower incidence of GvHD.
The immune cells in cord blood are less likely than those in bone marrow, from unrelated donors, to attack the patient’s own tissues.
Cord Blood Transplants are associated with lower risk of viral infections.
Cytomegalovirus is carried by about half of the US population and less than 1 percent of infants are born with it. Blood transplants are commonly associated with viruses such as Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus; but by using cord blood you are less likely to transmit the viruses.
